Stone Anchoring Detailing & Design
Presented by Scott W. Walkowicz, P.E., N.C.E.E.S.
This presentation focuses on anchoring large-scale stone and is generally applicable to both natural quarried/cut stone and cast stone. Design considerations to be discussed include stone size and shape, and the impact of the backup system on anchor capacity and overall movement of the stone. Available design information from codes and standards, published industry technical guides, and the presenter’s own experience incorporating FEA software analysis will also be discussed.
Alternative Designs of Masonry Veneer & Shelf Angle Supports

Chapter 12 of the TMS 402 2016 includes provisions for the design of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. Although the vast majority of anchored masonry veneer systems are designed using the prescriptive provisions within this standard, veneers in high wind zones, high seismic zones, or constructed with large distances between the backing walls and the veneer cannot be designed using these prescriptive provisions. In addition, the prescriptive provisions do not often provide the most cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and retrofit of masonry veneers. The TMS 402 does have provisions for alternative rational design provisions for masonry veneers. These provisions will be explained and a method for the rational veneer wall system design will be presented. This presentation will also describe a method for the design of the vertical Shelf angle support of the walls systems.

Tom Cunieo of CADBLOX will share information about software coordination for masonry. Cunieo will also discuss the new software of 3DiQ he developed as another tool to make it easier for designers to incorporate masonry accurately into their Revit models.
Masonry Hands-On Demonstration
Presented by Joe Alberts
In this hands-on demonstration, participants will have an opportunity to observe and attempt mock-ups of masonry installation techniques, their affiliated details, as well as ask questions.
Attendees will earn 6.5 credits for attending this program. This program meets the AIA/CES & HSW criteria for Continuing Education and PDH criteria for Continuing Education. Each attendee will receive a certificate.
